Chase Central Promenade is the home to AT&T plaza and the famous Cloud Gate by British artist Anish Kapoor. This 110-ton elliptical structure is forged of a seamless series of highly polished stainless steel plates and is Kapoor’s first public outdoor work installed in the United States. A 12-foot-high arch provides a "gate" to the concave chamber beneath the sculpture, inviting visitors to touch its mirror-like surface and see their image reflected back from a variety of perspectives.

Designed by Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe and opened in 1956, Illinois Institute of Technology’s Crown Hall appropriately houses the schools College of Architecture. “An early example of a large clear-span structure, Crown Hall is a column-free, flexible space, 120 feet by 220 feet, with an 18-foot high ceiling in its upper core. Four exterior columns on each side of the building stand 60 feet apart and support four plate girders from which the roof is hung. Through its careful details and clean proportions, the structure of S.R. Crown Hall is also the ornament. Inside the building, free-standing partitions suggest spaces for studios and exhibition.”

Chicago’s Historic Water Tower, made of Joliet Limestone blocks quarried in Illinois, was built in 1869 and used to control water surges in the area. It is best known for being one of the few buildings to survive the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 and has become a symbol of Chicago and a memorial to the victims of the Great Chicago Fire.

Opened in 2003, Illinois Institute of Technology’s McCormick Tribune Campus Center was designed by Rem Koolhaas. An integral component of Koolhaas’ design is the stainless steel clad tube seen here. The tube surrounds 530 feet of the Chicago Transit Authority’s Green Line and was designed to lessen the noise generated by passing trains. Described as “an amazing engineering feat” by IIT President, Lew Collens, the tube softens the sounds and vibrations of the trains which pass through it.
