This was only ever intended to be a technical test - I'm making no claims with regards photographic quality or artistic merit!

It was more about exploring the limits of both the hardware and software that is available out there.

(If you want to see other photographs I've taken of Dubai, that depending on your view may or may not have slightly more artistic qualities, please do check out my pages on Smugmug at http://gddxb.smugmug.com )

Air quality is not at its best at this time of year in Dubai (this was shot on the morning of 23rd April), and you have to work with what you're given.

4,250 individual shots taken with a Canon 7D and the 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L zoom at 400mm. Total shooting time circa 3 hours 30 minutes, in 37C heat (that's the temperature in the shade - the camera and lens were almost too hot to touch at the end of this).

Gigapan EPIC Pro.

Autopano Giga software.

Gigapan uploader.

PC - i7-920, 12GB RAM, 2x 300GB Velociraptors (not RAID). On attempting to stitch this the first time, I was told I needed just over a terabyte of scratch space, so I had to go out and buy a 2TB disk and install that as well!

Power and storage:
Amazingly, both the battery in the Gigapan and the one in the 7D lasted out. I had spare camera batteries with me, so wasn't really worried on that front, but I didn't know what to expect from the Gigapan's. My previous record from it was around 3,000 images (across two separate panoramas).

All 4,250 images (.jpg only) managed to fit on a single 32GB CF card, taking up 27.5 GB.

HUGE thanks to South Korean property developer Bando Construction and Engineering for making available the location to shoot this from - Ubora Towers in Business Bay, Dubai.

*edited the date taken field as it was showing the date the stitching was completed, and not the date the photos were taken.*

This is the same Hanauma Bay panorama as http://gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=4450. It's 70 columns X 25 rows of individual 8 megapixel frames stitched almost seamlessly by the GigaPan stitcher. Wave movement and people movement result in some interesting, often fun, stitching results, though.

Mahalo nui loa to Scott Telstad for fixing the exposure anomalies on the fully stitched image.

spacer 226042x21693px image will make you surprised of the details and the hiden places that could be seen. This is I thing the widest view of the town Kocani where the alomost 70% of the town is visible.

THIS IS THE HAND MADE PANORAMA WITHOUT USING THE ROBOT. Before last step corrections the pano was between 6-7Gpx, but in order to get the nice composition and quality it was cropped in Photoshop to 5Gpx. At the begining I almost reached the Photoshop limit of 300.000 px. Amazing experiance and result if you exclude the little visible mistakes.

PANORAMA FROM THE OTHER SIDE OF THE TOWN COULD BE SEEN ON THE FOLOWING LINK:

There are a few known stitching errors in this image. A NEW VERSION of the photo with most of the stitching errors corrected can be seen here:

spacer The first full-res stitch of our panorama taken at the top of the Corcovado mountain near the base of Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This digital photograph consists of a total of 6223 pictures taken at with a Canon t2i, a 400mm lens, a 2x extender, and the new GigaPan Epic Pro. It has around 67 gigapixels, which we believe is the world record in terms of resolution. There are some artifacts due to exposure inconsistency and vignetting that we hope to address in a later update.

RioHK is a collaborative gigapixel panorama project between IMPA (Rio de Janeiro) and HKUST (Hong Kong) led by Professors Luiz Velho (IMPA), Diego Nehab (IMPA) and Pedro Sander (HKUST).

Farewell to King Bladud's Pigs

spacer These pigs were individually decorated by local artists as a fund-raising initiative for the "Two Tunnels" sustainable transport project (http://www.twotunnels.org.uk/). They were on public display on the streets of Bath for six months in 2008 and were a great tourist attraction. You can see some of the pigs in their original locations by searching on the keyword "Bladud" and some of the snapshots have comments with links to the pig in the snapshot like this: http://www.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=6439&snapshot_id=31294.

The original pig was sculpted by Alan Dun: http://www.alandun.co.uk and http://www.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=11385&snapshot_id=31484.

There are over 100 pigs in total. This pano shows most of them. Sadly for the public, the pigs were sold at public auction. Happily for the Two Tunnels project, they raised a great deal of money. At least one pig sold for tens of thousands of pounds.

For an alternative version of this image taken later in the afternoon, see http://www.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=11385.

PIG ID PUZZLE (Open Research Problem, Experts Only)

Are any of the following pigs in this pano?

http://www.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=6439&snapshot_id=31293

http://www.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=7541&snapshot_id=31296

http://www.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=7459&snapshot_id=31285

Update. It seems that two of these pigs have been identified now by Texas_Photo - see comments below.
