There are many places in Yosemite National Park that are worth the trip to see. I would have to say that one of the "Must See"s is Glacier Point. It has one of the best "Bang for the Buck!" of any of the vistas in the park. The Point is a short few hundred yard walk from the parking lot. As you drive up to Glacier Point you have Taft Point and Sentinel Dome, both of which are a short 1.1 mile hike from the road, and the Washburn Point turnout. If you have the time, consider spending a day in the area enjoying these highlights.
This vista wasn't done from the public walkway at the Point. I visited the Point 3 times this summer, each time thinking I had found the perfect location for a Gigapan, only to find an even better spot the next visit, all the while determining the best time of day to start the Gigapan process. This spot is down the slope to the east quite a ways from the point and was quite precarious to get to. I considered trying to go down slope another 10 or 20 feet, but decided I was close enough to the multi thousand foot drop! This Gigapan is comprised of 2072 images and took 2 hours 2 minutes to complete. The cliffs in the shot were not all in sunlight at the same time. The shot was started on the left when those cliffs where starting to lose their light. At this time the cliffs on the right were still in shadow. By the time the shot had progressed to the right the sun had moved enough to light those cliffs, and the left cliffs were in shadow. This Gigapan was taken on a holiday weekend. There are people all over the place. How many can you find? How many of the places listed in the keywords list can you find? How many of the major tourist spots can you find. How many trails can you find? Can you find your favorite spot? Do you see any rock climbers on Half Dome? Do you see any rock climbers anywhere else? Enjoy! :) |

This is not one of the sharpest images ever. In fact some of it is really blurry because it was taken in a howling gale at x15 zoom (530mm, 35mm equivalent) - at one point my tripod (made from cast iron by the weight of it) blew over.
I've posted it for a couple of reasons. First, it is an amazing view and I hope this image will inspire someone with better luck (I tried for several hours on each of two days) to capture the scene perfectly. Second, I wanted to advertise the fact that although this was shot with a GigaPan unit, it is made from two sets of images that do not line up so I tried using Autopano Giga RC1 to stitch it, and stitch it it did! I think this is quite remarkable given how blurry the original images are - all the grass in the foreground is completely out of focus too. NB for those of you who know about RC1's ability to import GigaPan images, I did *not* use this function - i.e. the stitcher stitched the 600+ images as if they were a mosaic - incredible! Finally, some of you may be wondering why I have put a gigapan in this gigapan. More of you may not have even noticed it in the bottom right corner. NB it is not a thumbnail it is the full thing http://share.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=9168. Ok, it is the smallest possible gigapan (0.05Gpix) but it is a gigapan that many people have enjoyed exploring. It is not my intention to show off. The reason is to show people how big gigapans can be. If you have spent time exploring The Jolly Sailor then you'll be astonished to see how much bigger this gigapan is. If anyone from Kolor is reading this and would like to show us what their Yosemite pano looks like with my gigapan embedded in it then they are very welcome! |

As you approach you can see both the upper and lower falls. As you get closer you can only see the lower falls. At this time of year (late fall) there is little water coming over the falls and it allowed people to play on the rocks below. Canon S5IS Gigapan Epic 100 |

This is picturesque Yosemite Valley taken from a beach on the Merced river in the valley. This consists of over 1100 pictures taken with a gigapan.
This photograph was taken a couple of weeks before Memorial Day weekend, with the waterfalls flowing nicely but not quite at their maximums as yet. Can you spot the bear? |

Image taken from The Pedestal, Middle Cathredal Buttress in Yosemite National Park as part of the "Yosemite Extreme Panoramic Imaging Project", http://www.xrez.com/yose_proj/Yose_index.html . This is one of 20 gigapixel images shot at the same moment in time to document the valley's vertical walls for the purpose of helping analyze hazardous rockfall for park geologist Greg Stock. Thanks go out to Randy Sargent of Gigapan for supporting the 20 shooting teams with Gigapan units, they performed flawlessly under pressure. Thanks also to the 50 volunteer photographers who participated in the shoot. This photograph was taken by Greg Downing, Debra Isaac, Rick Jones & Nathan Appel. The National Park Service was our partner in the project, and the images have already found use in analyzing the recent 10/08 rockfall above Camp Curry. |

Ledge trail is a long abandoned trail that runs from the backside of Curry Village up to Glacier Point. About half way up you can cross the creek and climb up the rocks to this spectacular view. At one time power or telephone lines ran up this way, and there are a trio of eyehooks embedded in the rocks, thus my name for this spot, "Eyehook Point". From here you can see down into Yosemite Valley with a panorama that goes from Yosemite Falls to Nevada Fall and everything in between. Royal Arches, Washington Column, North Dome, Tenaya Canyon, Half Dome, Mt Watkins etc.
