Nikon D-300 |
| I've been working with a Nikon D-300 with a Micro-Nikkor 15 mm lens, mounted on a full sized Benbo Tripod. The combination works well with the Epic 100 Gigapan Unit. I'm now experimenting with using the Nikon 18-200 mm lens. This gets to be be a bit heavy, but so far the stepping motors handle the combination well. The "Live View" feature of the D-300 is particularly useful in setting the FOV and defining the limits of the pan. |

Outside the front of Phipps Conservatory & Botanical Gardens are the Sustainable Gardens. These beds harbor plants particularly suited to the Pittsburgh region and require little maintainance and will survive without regular watering.

Ohiopyle Falls on the Youghiogheny River at Ohiopyle, PA is the largest waterfall in western Pennsylvania. At the center of Ohiopyle State Park the falls marks the beginning of the fabled "lower Yough" a favorite of kayakers. After two heavy rains, the Yough was running high and muddy.

At Mile Marker 52 is the Pinkerton High Bridge over the Casselman River in Somerset County, Pennsylvaina. The bridge is one of seven on the Passage through the Allegheny Mountains. It once carried the Western Maryland Railway which was abandoned in 1975. The corridor was transformed to a biking/hiking trail now know as the Great Allegheny Passage, a 153 mile biking/hiking trail from Pittsburgh, PA to Cumberland, MD. At Cumberland the Passage connects with the C&O Canal trail which leads another 180 miles to Washington, DC. The combination is the longest continuous bike trail in the US. Following the old path of the WMdRwy through the Allegheny Mts of SW Pennsylvania, it is also the most scenic.

The low bridge over the Youghiogheny River in Ohiopyle, PA carries bikers and hikers from Ferncliff Peninsula into the village of Ohiopyle. Just downstream of the bridge is Ohiopyle Falls. The bridge was designed specifically for trail use. It replaces a larger bridge that carried the Western Maryland Railway. The WMdRwy was abandoned in 1975, and one section of the span was removed to ease a bottleneck on Rt 381 through Ohiopyle. When the Great Allegheny Passage bike trail was being built a complete span was necessary to avoid using highways for the trail. A new bridge was designed and built. The new span, seen here, was completed in 2000.
