Here's an improved version, this time shot using dual tungsten reflector lights in a studio. Details are crisper and the color much improved -- no washout and very close to the original.

Can you find the 8 dragons?
This is a gigapan study of a small thangka -- a canvas scroll painting that I purchased during a 2007 visit to Kathmandu, Nepal. Thangkas are created by anonymous (in this case, Tibetan) Buddhist monk-artists as both a record of, and guide for contemplative experience. This 40x40 cm piece is a mandala, the "floorplan of the universe." At the center is the Endless Knot, an important tantric symbol.
I'm happy with the detail, but the color is less vibrant than the original -- time to get out the studio lights. Tripod and Canon SX10 at 20x zoom were set up approx. 220 cm from the picture plane.

The Frank Slide is a natural landslide on the northeasterly face of Turtle Mountain in southwest Alberta, Canada. On April 29, 1903, 30 million cubic meters of rock tumbled down to the valley floor, burying much of the small town of Frank, and killing 76 people.

The Wheel (Skt. chakra) is a composite symbol: the hub symbolizes moral discipline, the eight spokes stand for wisdom that overcomes ignorance, and the rim is a symbol of concentration that holds all else together.

The Endless Knot (Skt. shrivatsa) is a symbol of endless wisdom and human connectedness and continuity as the underlying reality of existence. It's a favorite symbol of Tibetan Buddhism.
