The front row was reserved for D-Day veterans and their guests at the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford, Virginia during the 65th anniversary of D-Day. Many other veterans were also in attendance along with citizens of the world who came to pay respect and remember the valor and sacrifice of the soldiers who participated in the Normandy Landings 65 years ago beginning June 6, 1944. (One of two similar panoramic GigaPans, the other is http://www.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=25317)

At the top of the pane we see a somber sky, diving planes and lightning. In the center of the dark clouds four apocalyptic horse riders are wreaking havoc. The flooded polders also reflect war and disaster; people try to save what they can in small boats. In the center of the pane a church goes up in flames between burnt-out buildings. Further down on the far left three representations of the horrors of war: resistance fighters hanging at the gallows; a man arrested in his bed; and four starving...

25% of the shipyard workers on the west coast during WWII were women.
We are still living in the aftereffects of the social changes that came from WWII.
During WWII the defense department outlawed racial discrimination in defense contractors. We didn't have that in the civilian world for a long time.
The post war dislocation was massive, and there was a passive, perhaps even active, attempt to push the lessons learned back into the memory hole.
It was okay for Rosie to rivet ...

A view of the World War II Memorial on the mall in Washington, DC looking towards the Lincoln Memorial. Planes were leaving from National Airport while the panorama was being made but, yes, the plane in the picture was captured once the GigaPan had finished its pan. (I'm not that lucky or that good.) Look for the geese, the wind vane (?) and the wreath (thanks, Vets, we remember).

The World War II Memorial honors the 16 million who served in the armed forces of the U.S., the more than 400,000 who died, and all who supported the war effort from home. Symbolic of the defining event of the 20th Century, the memorial is a monument to the spirit, sacrifice, and commitment of the American people. The Second World War is the only 20th Century event commemorated on the National Mall’s central axis.
Construction began in September 2001. The memorial opened to the public on Ap...

A view outside the Eagle's Nest built and completed by the Nazis by 1938, situated in the mountains near Berchtesgaden.
A total of 113 individual shots were taken and were stitched together using Hugin with respective plug-ins. Unfortunately, it was cloudy with slightly low visibility.
