This Gigapan was taken at an elevation of 200ft above sea level, from the Twin Lights Lighthouse in Highlands, New Jersey. The nearby Mt. Mitchell Scenic Overlook is at an elevation of 266 ft and is the highest place on the eastern seaboard, between southern Maine and the Yucatan in Mexico!
Sandy Hook is the seven mile sand peninsula in the foreground that jutes out into Raritan Bay south of New York. A unit of the Gateway National Recreation Area and part of the National Parks of New York Harbor, it also includes Fort Hancock, a disused miltary base. Check out the snapshots and you can see the Statue of Liberty over 20 miles away, the Verrazano Narrows Bridge between Staten Island and Brooklyn, the Empire State Building in Manhattan and the Parachute Ride and the Wonder Wheel on Cooney Island! http://www.bigtex.com When: Sept. 26 - Oct. 19 Where: Fair Park, a 277-acre entertainment and recreation complex owned by the City of Dallas, is located two miles east of downtown. The park is the year-round home of the Music Hall, Cotton Bowl and eight museums. Fair Park is a National Historic Landmark and boasts the largest collection of art deco exposition buildings in the United States. Big Tex Big Tex made his debut at the 1952 State Fair of Texas. Wearing size 70 boots and a 75-gallon hat, Tex towered 52' above wide-eyed visitors. His denim jeans and plaid shirt were donated by the H. D. Lee Company of Shawnee Mission, Kansas. Cosmetic surgery the following year straightened his nose, corrected a lascivious wink and allowed him to talk. From The Great State Fair of Texas – An Illustrated History, by Nancy Wiley. HISTORY: The first State Fair to be held in Dallas was presented at this location in 1886. Fair Park was the site of the 1936 Texas Centennial Exposition which ran for six months and attracted 6 million people. An extended 31-day Fair in 1986 celebrated the Texas Sesquicentennial and drew almost 4 million visitors. |

Chicago's Navy Pier. It used to be part of the U.S. Navy facility in WW2, then for a while the University of Illinois (of which I'm affiliated) was located here. Now it's one of the big tourist attractions along the lake, with the Ferris Wheel, an IMAX theater, The Children's Museum, and a number of shops and events. |

A System for Studying the Mouse Odometer - Daniel Greene, Alan Daniel, Charles Gallistel Odometry is the ability of animals to estimate their location and distance traveled without the use of landmarks. Because it is computationally straightforward, understanding how odometry works may shed light on the general computational abilities of the brain. We built and have begun testing a self-contained living environment that assesses the ability of mice to remember distances run in a wheel.
