spacer In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, cast-plaster fragments of classical and historical buildings were collected so working-class people and students who couldn’t afford to travel would be able to be able to see some of the world's greatest art and architectural masterpieces.

Many American institutions, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, created their own cast-plaster collections. In 2005, the Met’s collection was dispersed to a handful of academic institutions, including the University of Notre Dame School of Architecture. Some of the casts are now on permanent display in the Bond Hall Gallery thanks to the generous support of Matt and Joyce Walsh.

They are shown here via Gigapan technology which allows one to zoom in to see the collection in great detail. These casts represent architectural and artistic masterpieces of the Classical world through the Renaissance. Visitors from all over the world once visited the Met’s Great Hall to draw and learn from the collection. Today, students, faculty, and visitors to the University of Notre Dame School of Architecture do the same.

spacer This is a 180 degree panorama of the University of Pittsburgh Commons, taken from the first floor on June 24, 2009.

"The Cathedral of Learning, a historic landmark, is the second-tallest education building in the world—42 stories and 535 feet tall. It is also the geographic and traditional heart of the campus.

Begun by Chancellor John Bowman in 1926 and dedicated in 1937, the building was realized with the help of contributions from men, women, and children throughout the region and the world. During the peak of the Depression, when funding for the project became especially challenging, school children were encouraged to contribute a dime to "buy a brick."

In addition to the magnificent three-story "Commons Room" at ground level, the Cathedral of Learning also contains classrooms (including the internationally renowned Nationality Classrooms), the University's administrative offices, libraries, a computer center, a restaurant, and offices and classrooms for many liberal arts departments.

Trivia tidbit: The Cathedral of Learning has 2,529 windows."

spacer The University of Central Florida - UCF - is a booming campus with an ever expanding student population. This shot was taken in front of the Main Library, one of the original buildings on the relatively new campus. Taken the Monday before Thanksgiving, 2008. It is composed of 649 shots from a Canon Powershot G9 12 Megapixel camera and it took my computer about 24 hours to crunch it together. This is the biggest one I have taken so far. Wish I had a faster computer sometimes :-) P.S. My lovely wife, the one with the red and white purse, is in this shot 8 times. Can you find them all?

Since this was Wednesday, this must have been taken on the campus of Rice University (I had just been to Fondren Library), and had my new camera lens with me and wanted to test taking a 360 with it and even though there were too many clouds; well, it was only to be a test. As I approached the center of the Engineering Quad, a student walked by and I asked her if she wanted to be in this GigaPan, but she was on the way to class. She recognized me as I had taken portraits of her at a campus costume party a few days before (soon to be uploaded to gigapan.org).

As she was leaving, Alicia came up to me and asked if I was Donald. It seems that she had won an employee award and was going to have her photo taken by the Engineering Department photographer whose name was Donald. To make a long story very short, in this GigaPan, we see Donald taking a few snaps of Alicia.

In this panorama, we see the three famous slabs of granite (http://tinyurl.com/RiceUniversity-EngineeringQuad), Keck Hall (http://www.gigapan.org/gigapans/8855/) and Duncan Hall (http://www.gigapan.org/gigapans/9622/).

This hand-held 360-panorama was taken by my trusty Nikon D70 with a new lens, the Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G. Additional details can be found on Stitcher Notes with information there concerning the GigaPan Stitcher run.

Note: This panorama can be seen in Google Earth as a beautiful 360-degree curved panorama on a curved surface by clicking the link, View in Google Earth (assuming that you have Google Earth installed on your computer).

There are numerous views of this area that can be found in earlier GigaPans, but I would say that none of them were taken on such a beautiful day as what this was. A special one was taken 12 months before during the construction of Audrey Moody Ley Plaza: http://www.gigapan.org/gigapans/18294/

This hand-held panorama taken in the Audrey Moody Ley Plaza features Tudor Fieldhouse, Jake Hess Tennis Stadium and Reckling Baseball Park, home of the Rice Owls, 2003 National Collegite Baseball Champions.

This 18-photo, 360-degree panorama was taken hand-held using a Leica D-Lux 3 and stitched using the GigaPan Stitcher.

spacer I am taking a class at Point Park University in Pittsburgh, Pa on the gigapan and one of our categories is Collections. I decided to use my step-grandmothers fairy collection because it is really interesting and beautiful. I also have a gigapan of my grandfathers boats which is pretty cool as well.
My Step-Grandmother, Renee, passed away on August 31st, 2009. She was a huge believer in the Jewish faith and Grandmother of eleven grandchildren. She had a love in collecting fairies and had a huge collection of about 300-400 fairies. Some of these fairies are worth a lot of money, but even the inexpensive ones are really beautiful to look and it can sometimes be hard to tell them apart from the expensive ones. Renee even has a small collection of “reject fairies,” as some of the family calls them, which are hidden in a backroom. She didn’t want to get rid of them but at the same them they just don’t fit in with the other fairies. Since she is not with us anymore I could not get any specifications on the fairies or their exact worth. If you take a good look at this picture you’ll find things on the shelves that are not fairies, like Jewish symbols and some other decorations.
My Grandparents love to travel and have been all over the United States to several cities including Las Vegas, New York, Niagara Falls, Seattle, Illinois, Cape Cod, Boston, Etc. My Grandmother also collects magnets from all the places my Grandparents visit in their travels. She has three refrigerators full of magnets (too many to count). My Grandparents are also big fans of the Goodwill store. They have found so many really cool items including the clock that is tagged in this photo. After doing some research, Howard Miller clocks run new and used between $20 and $1000 dollars. My Grandfather got his for just $5 in great condition.
