spacer The Tacoma Narrows Bridge is a pair of mile-long suspension bridges in the U.S. state of Washington, which carry State Route 16 across the Tacoma Narrows between Tacoma and the Kitsap Peninsula. They replaced a bridge that was opened to traffic on July 1, 1940 and which became famous four months later for a dramatic wind-induced structural collapse that was caught on motion picture film. The original span's motion earned it the nickname Galloping Gertie.
Due to materials shortages as a result of World War II, it took 10 years to build a replacement bridge, which opened October 14, 1950. The 1950 replacement bridge was sometimes referred to as Sturdy Gertie and, like its predecessor, was the third longest suspension span in the world at the time of its construction. Population growth on the Kitsap peninsula caused traffic to exceed the bridge's vehicle capacity, and a parallel bridge was constructed to carry eastbound traffic, while the 1950 bridge was reconfigured to carry westbound traffic. The new bridge opened July 15, 2007.

spacer Sutro Baths, the newly renovated Cliff House and Seal Rock (yes, there are seals on the rocks) in San Francisco on a very windy day.

Same area, different perspective: http://gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=27665

View from the other side of the mountain: http://gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=27659
Here's a link to what Sutro Baths used to look like. http://www.alamedainfo.com/postcards_of_san_francisco_3.htm Notice the buildings, the trams, the statues, etc. There used to be a place where there were roller coasters, other rides, and arcades at Playland. It was quite an exciting area. Today you see...well, what you see in my pictures.

spacer Shot on a beautiful February day in 2010 from the north side of the Narrows. The Tacoma Narrows Bridge is a pair of mile-long suspension bridges in the U.S. state of Washington, which carry State Route 16 across the Tacoma Narrows between Tacoma and the Kitsap Peninsula. They replaced a bridge that was opened to traffic on July 1, 1940 and which became famous four months later for a dramatic wind-induced structural collapse that was caught on motion picture film. The original span's motion earned it the nickname Galloping Gertie. In the distance you can see Mount Rainier, or Mount Tahoma, as it is traditionally called, is a large active stratovolcano (also known as a composite volcano) in Pierce County, Washington, located 54 miles (87 km) southeast of Seattle. It towers over the Cascade Range as the most prominent mountain in the contiguous United States and Cascade Volcanic Arc at 14,411 feet (4,392 m). It is the highest mountain in Washington and the Cascade Range. Lat/Lng 47.274447, -122.559526
