Outside the front of Phipps Conservatory & Botanical Gardens are the Sustainable Gardens. These beds harbor plants particularly suited to the Pittsburgh region and require little maintainance and will survive without regular watering. |

Dutch gardens and roofs in a rural neighbourhood. I tried to make a 360 degrees panorama but my software chocked on the 550 photos it had to stitch.
Just get on your roof and start shooting. |

Designed by Gustafson Guthrie Nichol Ltd, Piet Oudolf and Robert Israel, this 2.5-acre garden pays homage to the City's motto, "Urbs in Horto" (City in a Garden), which refers to Chicago's transformation from its flat and marshy origins to a bold and powerful city. Highlights of the garden include the dramatically lit, 15-foot-high "shoulder" hedge. This physical representation of Sandburg's famous description of the "City of Big Shoulders" encloses the garden on two sides and protects the delicate perennial garden. A graceful hardwood footbridge over shallow water divides the garden diagonally between "light" and "dark" plates.
About this picture: Terry Evans, a Chicago artist photographer, was recruited by the Chicago Office of Tourism to create a Gigapan. She selected the subject, time, and orientation and the Gigapan equipment was run by Ted Socolofsky, a local Gigapan enthusiast. Taken in early October, 2008, the leaves are just beginning to blush with their Fall colours. The Halifax Public Gardens ( a National HIstoric Stie) began in the mid 1800's as a horticultural society for the citizens of Halifax. Now the Halifax Municipality owns and operates the 20-acre garden in the downtown of the city. It is one of the last Victorian gardens in North America and is meticulously groomed each Spring and replenished from adjacent greenhouses. Its lacey plan of formal pathways is clearly visible in the GoogleEarth aerial view. The red-roofed band shell is the scene of Sunday afternoon brass band concerts all Summer, and the delicate gazebo has even been featured on a recent Canada Post stamp. Why is there a minature Titanic anchored in the pond, you may wonder? Halifax was one of the nearest major ports to the 1912 disaster and rescue ships from Halifax were first to arrive on the scene of the sinking --- mainly "rescuing" bodies, unfortunately. Many of the victims were buried afterwards in Halifax, and that cemetery now is a tourist destination. Especially popular is a tombstone marked "J. Dawson", who has no relationship to the fictional character Leonardo di Caprio played in the Hollywood blockbuster. This "J. Dawson" was actually a crew member. Many artifacts from the Titanic wreck are on display at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic on the Halifax waterfront. Visit: http://titanic.gov.ns.ca/ to learn more. The miniature Titanic in the pond, then, commemorates Halifax's special connection to the ship. For more information about the city itself, visit: http://www.halifaxinfo.com/ |

Mapperton Gardens is a unique valley garden in west dorset, in an area of outstanding natural beauty. The gardens surround the Jacobean manor house, stable blocks, dovecote and All Saints Church. Below the orangery and croquet lawn is an Italianate formal garden with fountains, topiary, grottoes, ponds and stone statuary, laid out in the 1920s. Beyond is a summer house overlooking two fish ponds. |
