spacer This was the site of the Fine Outreach For Science Gigapan workshop. 25 scientists and science journalists were invited to the workshop to learn how to use Gigapan and see demonstrations of how Gigapan can be used in various research activities. The reception at the end of the first workshop was held in the Carnegie Music Hall Foyer, a beautiful space built in the 1890s. Thanks to the Fine foundation for making this possible!

You can see another Gigapan of this reception here:

Camera settings - I used an SX110 to get this shot. The light level was pretty low, so I had an exposure time 1.6", with focus manually set to about 5 meters out. I lowered my F-stop to 5.0 from my typical 8.0, giving up a little depth of field for a shorter exposure time. ISO was 80, though I probably could have gone to 100 or 200 to shorten exposure time even more. I used a 2 second timer on the camera so that the image was taken only 2 seconds after the button pusher pushed the shutter button; with this exposure I needed to set the time per pic on the Gigapan to about 10 seconds/shot (so the total image took 20 minutes). The static parts of the image came out very crisp, so I'm very happy with this. Naturally, most people don't stay still for 1.6 seconds, so people are in varying stages of blurriness depending on how much they moved.

spacer Limestone Bluff Cedar-Pine Forest at Lone Rock Point, Vermont – Dunham dolostone (Cambrian, light color) has been thrust to the west as much as 80 km (50 miles) and rests here on top of much younger Iberville shale (Ordovician, black). The contrasting appearance of the two rock types, and the ca. 50 million year difference in their ages, contribute to the fame of this exposure. Three commercial tour boats slowed for a look while I was there (there is a better exposure around the point to the right).

The calcareous dolostone supports a forest of northern white cedar. Common on rocky headlands like this, the forest type is rare elsewhere in Vermont. A snapshot of this GigaPan shows the location of another GigaPan (http://www.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=30375) showing the interior of the bluff forest.

spacer Rattlesnake Point is the ultimate vantage for Lake Dunmore and most of Salisbury, Vermont. I took a panorama from here on August 1, but it was so hazy it would not stitch properly. After a month of hazy or cloudy weather, I returned to this point on September 2, but it was the day public schools opened in Vermont, so there were no swimmers and few boaters. There was also no one else on the trail, which climbs 283 m (930 feet) above the lake, and it was a wonderful morning hike.

spacer Normal fault in the Fort Hays member of the Cretaceous Niobrara Formation, south of Stockton, Kansas. These chalk beds were originally deposited in the shallow Western Interior Seaway about 80 million years ago. The thick beds of the Fort Hays member are extensively bioturbated. Faulting is post-Cretaceous and pre-Quaternary.

spacer Mesic Maple-Ash-Hickory-Oak Forest -- Thin glacial till soils over calcium-rich limestone and marble on this west-facing slope support a productive forest dominated by sugar maple, red oak, and white ash. Shagbark hickory and hophornbeam are also common. If allowed to mature for a few decades, this could become important habitat for the federally endangered Indiana bat, whose second largest breeding colony in the country is 3 km from here. Indiana bats spend daytime in summer under tree bark, favoring large live shagbark hickory trees or large dead standing trees of other species with detaching bark.
