spacer This is not one of the sharpest images ever. In fact some of it is really blurry because it was taken in a howling gale at x15 zoom (530mm, 35mm equivalent) - at one point my tripod (made from cast iron by the weight of it) blew over.

I've posted it for a couple of reasons. First, it is an amazing view and I hope this image will inspire someone with better luck (I tried for several hours on each of two days) to capture the scene perfectly. Second, I wanted to advertise the fact that although this was shot with a GigaPan unit, it is made from two sets of images that do not line up so I tried using Autopano Giga RC1 to stitch it, and stitch it it did! I think this is quite remarkable given how blurry the original images are - all the grass in the foreground is completely out of focus too. NB for those of you who know about RC1's ability to import GigaPan images, I did *not* use this function - i.e. the stitcher stitched the 600+ images as if they were a mosaic - incredible!

Finally, some of you may be wondering why I have put a gigapan in this gigapan. More of you may not have even noticed it in the bottom right corner. NB it is not a thumbnail it is the full thing http://share.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=9168. Ok, it is the smallest possible gigapan (0.05Gpix) but it is a gigapan that many people have enjoyed exploring.

It is not my intention to show off. The reason is to show people how big gigapans can be. If you have spent time exploring The Jolly Sailor then you'll be astonished to see how much bigger this gigapan is. If anyone from Kolor is reading this and would like to show us what their Yosemite pano looks like with my gigapan embedded in it then they are very welcome!

Self Portrait - Bedroom

spacer Just playing around with a self portrait of myself in my bedroom. For some reason it stitched my face incorrectly so I look a bit deformed (typical!!) and also stitched incorrectly a couple of things such as window frames but other than that I am quite pleased with it. The light changed drastically as I was shooting it so some of the light is a little dappled and also overexposed in the center of the photograph as the sun came out from behind a cloud.

This was taken as part of a series of portraits of people I know (the first one that I have uploaded... more to come!) - I feel that objects, belongings and the items that we choose to fill our lives with almost say more about us than our bodies do. I am Gigapanning people in their environments to try and capture them amongst their surroundings and chosen belongings.

spacer The workshop was held at the Study Gallery of Modern Art (soon to be The Kube, http://www.thestudygallery.org), Poole, UK on 23rd and 24th March 2009. The workshop was sponsored by Sibyl King of the Fine Family Foundation and hosted by Bournemouth University.

Search on "poole" to find gigapans taken by the participants. The correct search keys are "fofs dorset" but not many of the particpants have used them. Yet. (Hint.)

For a better view of the gallery see http://www.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=20017.

spacer This tiny island is of course the site of the headquarters of the well-known International Rescue, but a little-known geographical feature of the Dorset Coast in the UK. The beach is one of the most fossiliferous coastal sites in England. If you have sharp eyes you may* just be able to make out cmlbath fossil-hunting at the base of the cliff in the distance.

You can see the bay to the West (left) here: http://tinyurl.com/lnx6gh and you can see where the gigapan was taken here: http://tinyurl.com/nd6kkp. For more gigapans of this area try searching on 'Charmouth' and/or 'fossils'. Here is a good one by Richard Edmonds to get you started: http://tinyurl.com/naaxog.

Rock-heads may* be interested in the close-up of the cliff here: http://tinyurl.com/n4ftx4.

Ack! I just noticed a horrible stitching error on the horizon ... Oh well, perhaps I will re-do it. I shot it bracketed and the sky has lots of texture so I could have some fun doing a little tone-mapping at the same time.

FWIW This image is stitched with what is - in my opinion - the most over-priced and unreliable stitching software available - Autopano Giga 3.0.2. True it has made a better job of stitching on this occasion than the gigapan stitcher (http://tinyurl.com/ntlgce) but at least gigapan don't have the audacity to charge you the laughable price of €199 plus 20% tax for the privilege. And in any case gigapan stitching errors are highly entertaining. And the devs are nice people and say 'thanks' when you go to the trouble of posting them a DVD containing images that don't stitch.

Recently APG failed to render a 9 by 5! And we are talking *multiband* here!! (Fume.)

I need to go and have a little lie-down now. I'm not sure what the emoticon is for "brain explodes" but consider it to be this: {}==:-0

spacer A wonderful view of stereotypical English countryside best appreciated with lashings of ginger beer. The railway actually has steam trains running on it.

This doesn't really do the view justice. I tried to take a much bigger gigapan several times (over two days) but the weather and gremlins got in the way.

Update: here it is http://share.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=20850.

spacer A quick shot taken while the workshop was in progress. I took this shot because the strong light through the windows would give me something to practice my tone mapping on, and because you can see two of the three 17-foot (5.2m) long gigapan prints that Illah brought with him. You can see the third here: http://www.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=19954&snapshot_id=60485.

The gigapans featured here are:

The Petra Great Temple from Behind (http://gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=6790)
and

The Point from Mount Washington (http://gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=3132).

See http://www.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=3722 for another example of a gigapan print.

spacer This limestone arch is a frequently-shot feature of Dorset's Jurassic Coast. This shot is unusual for me because the sun is directly in the camera field of view, straight ahead.

Gad Cliff, Brandy Bay and Kimmeridge, Dorset coast

spacer The top of Gad Cliff offers one of the most spectacular views along the Dorset and East Devon coast World Heritage Site (the Jurassic Coast). Here the rocks have been folded into a huge ā€˜S’ shaped kink as the result of earth movements about 15 million years ago. In the foreground, Kimmeridge Clay together with Portland and Purbeck strata, lie in the southern side of the fold and are dipping steeply to the north. In the distance, the same rocks are level as they are located away from the fold. This huge structure, known as the Purbeck Monocline, runs east to west across Purbeck, dominating the landscape.
