Every Sunday for a year and a half, starting in October 1997, a group of Pittsburgh metal artists sneaked into the abandoned Carrie Furnace site, along with their tools and equipment. They used materials found on site to create a 45' tall deer head. The group - Industrial Arts Collective - is currently working on a large scale sculpture on the former Jones and Laughlin and LTV mill sites, on the South Side of Pittsburgh. Note: an earlier GigaPan, http://www.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=30905 , did not include the panoramic view of Pasadena and the Houston Ship Channelarea as does this panorama.
Taken from the 24th floor of Hilton Americas Hotel: http://tinyurl.com/2og9ru An stunning view of Houston from Galena Park and the Houston Ship Channel area westward to the heart of the downtown area, especially so since there are two pillars not shown in this panorama, but yet the view can almost be considered seamless except that the railing shows where there should be a pillar(s). The GigaPan Stitcher comes though with flying colors on this one. The view, taken from the 24th floor and was breathtaking as I took it using my trusty Nikon D70 (soon to be retired) and a Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 lens. There is no Photoshop on this panorama, only the GigaPan Stitcher, and the collection of photos were taken hand-held. |

Menefee Mountain In Southwestern Colorado USA
I hiked up from the highway but the Gigapan shutter plunger fell off in my truck. I ended up pushing the shutter by hand . I had seen alot of deer tracks on the way up and a few to many mountain lion tracks. Toward the end of the shoot I saw a large mule deer buck and was disappointed when I realized that he wasn't going to be in the pan. I got home and was pleasantly surprised to see I had caught some anyway. I must say that that this Gigapanning is great fun. It a new answer to the age old question "Why does a man climb a mountain?" Happy Hunting |

I am uploading this Gigapan a second time after cropping off the jagged edges and replacing the mountain top image that was blurry in the initial upload on June 11, 2009.
My experimental decision to use the "Infinity" focus on the Nikon P90 for this Gigapan worked out generally OK. However, in the left bottom foreground the rocks and dandilions, surprisingly were sometimes in focus and other times not. It would be interesting to try to shoot a Gigapan where objects close to the camera were in sharp focus as well as those in the distance. It would take a lot of time and processing work, but it seems possible to reshoot and replace some of the single tiled images to create this effect. |

This is the U.S./Mexico border wall as it approaches the San Pedro National Riparian Conservation Area in Arizona (picture taken during the dry season). Construction is planned to continue directly through the Conservation Area, a region of unique and sensitive wildlife and biological diversity. The San Pedro River is one of the last undammed, free-flowing rivers in the American Southwest. The river and Conservation Area are known as one of the most biologically diverse areas in the U.S., hosting an estimated 83 species of mammals, more than 100 species of breeding birds and an additional 250 species of migratory and wintering birds. The border wall: 1) is planned to cross the San Pedro River and its floodplain, as well as over 60 seasonal streams and desert washes causing significant erosion and sedimentation into the river impacting habitat, 2) blocks wildlife movements that ensure healthy wildlife populations, with especially concerning impact on such rare and sensitive species as Sonoran pronghorn, jaguar, Mexican wolves, Mexican Black Bear and ocelot, 3) increases the likelihood that invasive species will colonize an ecosystem of international importance, 4) shifts undocumented migrant traffic, enforcement activities and associated degredation into adjacent wildlands, including rugged and ecologically-sensitive Sky Island mountain ranges (Sky Islands are tall mountain ranges that rise up from a "sea" of surrounding desert to support diverse ecosystems. These mountains receive enough moisture to sustain woodlands and forests, and provide niches for unique species that can only be found in these isolated "islands" of habitat.) www.defenders.org www.northernjaguarproject.org www.defenders.org |

Mule deer fawn. The fawn was quite well hidden in the grass and I couldn't see it from much further away, so I took this photo from about 15 feet from where it slept.
