This panorama of the Erie Canal was taken in Pittsford, New York on the afternoon of October 6, 2009. Nine portrait-mode images have been stitched together.

The historic Erie Canal runs from the Hudson River in Albany to Lake Erie near Buffalo, New York. The canal was begun in 1817, completed in 1825, and enlarged in the 1850's and early 1900's. The section through Pittsford, New York was opened in 1822, making Pittsford an active commericial port along the path to the mid-western United States. Today all canal traffic is recreational.

An excellent history of the Erie Canal can be found on Wikipedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erie_Canal

My Flickr photograph of a sailboat passing through nearby Erie Canal Lock 33 can be seen at -

Pittsford was incorporated in 1827 and grew as a direct consequence of commerce on the Erie Canal. During the Civil War, Pittsford was a major stop on the "Underground Railroad", providing a refuge for runaway slaves. Today, Pittsford is well know for its golf courses, including Oak Hill Country Club, which has hosted 3 U.S. Opens, 2 PGA tournaments, and the Ryder Cup. The Locust Hill Country Club hosts an annual LPGA tournament. The NFL Buffalo Bills also hold their summer training camp in Pittsford, at St. John Fisher College. Chuck Mangione, the Grammy-winning jazz musician known for playing the flugelhorn and the song "Feels So Good", is a resident of Pittsford. spacer This panorama was taken on my first day in Venice showing a wide sweep of Venice, from San Giorgio Maggiore on the left to St. Marks, and a water taxi stop at the right.

It was shot handheld, with a Canon EOS-20D and 70-200mm f2.8 lens. It was a very crappy day, so I had to process the image fairly heavy, but there's a lot of detail there nonetheless.

spacer Murano an island near Venice that is famous for its glass since 1292.

Around this time Venice's glass artisans were forced to relocate to Murano because their kilns posed a fire hazard in central Venice.

spacer A virtual copy of another of my images. I was attempting to do something towards high dynamic range (hdr) imagery.
The other image has a grey dreary sky, which wasn't literally the case when I took my images...but at a larger level, it _might_ have been the statement I was interested in making.
Hard to tell, really. I am now gearing up (largely 'mentally') to be able to kick these panos up a level. To do things like preprocess the soure images for saturation and white balance and whatever else matters. But since it takes so long to take and stitch even a conventional gigapan I just don't know...
