spacer This project by Frank Gehry in cooperation with Vlado Milunic marks the corner at the Jiraskuv Bridge. Officially named the 'Rasin Building,' soon after its conception it was dubbed 'Ginger and Fred,' as it dances like the famous couple Rogers and Astaire around the corner.

spacer First shot i've taken that I feel was worth the extra time to photoshop and make perfect, including everything from the Mercedes Benz shoot to the cars stopped in traffic on the West Side Highway. Also what I think is the first shot taken at this resolution of the new Highline Park that's just opened. Definitely the most time i've ever spent working on a single picture...pretty good view from here. Printing as big as I can as well. enjoy!

spacer A fine photograph of the tallest tower in the world and its construction site. The tower is 800 metres high. Behind, on the right, the man built canal which will pass trough the city soon, requiring the destruction of roads and compounds. On the left, the old Dubai, small compounds with sand roads which were surrounded by desert and dunes just 3 years ago. Zooming, you will see all the new towers just coming out of the ground, have a look at the roads and the size of the whole construction site. Look at the number of buses which carry the thousands of workers who work on the site.

The red brick Gooderham Building (commonly referred to as the Flatiron Building) at 49 Wellington Street East in Toronto, Ontario, Canada is located on the eastern edge of the city's financial district (east of Yonge Street), on the north side of the Front Street (St. Lawrence) neighbourhood wedged between Front Street and Wellington Street, where they join up to form a triangular intersection. Although a prominent landmark both for its colour and shape, it is only five storeys high. It is also the first flatiron building in a major city.

It was built in 1892. The previous building was shorter but in the same shape and was called the Coffin Block. It was built by architect David Roberts, Jr. and originally cost $18,000 to construct for distiller George Gooderham, son of the founder William Gooderham. It was the office of the Gooderham & Worts distillery until 1952 and sold by the Gooderham Estate in 1957.

It is well-known both for its narrow wedge shape, and for the mural on its back wall, which uses a trompe l'oeil effect to not only make the wall appear to have more windows than it does, but to also give it a more mobile effect by having its edges 'fluttering' away where they are not 'tacked' down. The mural, called Trompe.d'oille, was created by renowned Canadian artist Derek Michael Besant. The mural is a picture of the Perkins Building, which is located directly across the street. Saved by David and Thomas Walsh, restoration took place in 1998 by the owners Michael and Anne Tippin. The building was declared a historic site in 1975 and is now managed and owned by Woodcliffe Corporation.

Empire State Building View I

spacer This is a redo of a previous gigapan, as I found more images that belonged.

A few notes on how this was done, and why there are some funky edges on 7x7 image.

Kit: Epic 100, Olympus E510, 40-150 lens, 150mm (35mm: 300mm)

No tripods are allowed on the Observatory Deck of the Empire State Building, both as a safety requirement and to cut down on photographers heading up there with their view cameras or gigapans on a nice day and hogging all the good corners. :-) This means that you can't use a gigapan, since it is not something that you can hand-hold. Being the ornery person I am, I searched for an alternative.

I got around this by using a monopod with base feet, a Manfrotto unit that I had picked up years and years ago and only recently discovered actually had the feet, which are nothing more than steel rods, threaded to fit into screwed sockets at the base to provide a modicum of support. I wrote the corporation that runs the Empire State Building if this was acceptable, but received no answer, so when I was recently in New York, I simply went there. I passed through security with no problem, with the head of security commenting that a monopod was allowable.

I then set up the Epic 100 at the top of the Empire State Building on the monopod.

While the unit is impressively stable compared to not having base feet at all, it does sway quite a bit if left to its own devices. Hence I made sure to brace the monopod as well as I could, trying to keep the balance centered on the unit, but found that I need a lot more practice to get this down right. Hence I stopped the first one I did (and erased it from the card) and upped the FOV so that I would get a fair amount of overlap to compensate for the swaying of the gigapan, which does generate a fair amount of torque when tranversing rows or columns.

So, that's the secret of how to do a gigapan where no tripods are allowed: use something that isn't a tripod, but pretends to be.

I am still curious about the lighting on this and the others: the overall balance of the colors looks almost like a tobacco color, which was definitely not the coloration I remember from that day. Will have to see if I can take a closer look at what is driving that coloration...

spacer View from Boise Depot looking down Capitol Blvd. to Downtown Boise and Capitol Building. The Boise Foothills are visible in the background.

I am not satisfied with the sharpness in this image. I have to experiment with my camera to see if I can improve this function.

Note! On April 22 I shot another Gigapan image from this same perspective and the sharpness is much more acceptable. I have also geotagged that image to Google Earth.
