Szentbékkálla is a village in the Káli-basin, Balaton-Highland, Hungary. In the medieval ages the village had a monastery of St. Benedict order, that explains its name, because earlier it was Szentbenedekkál (Kál of Saint Benedict). Kál was a prince and landlord here in the ages of the Árpád's peoples arrival to Hungary.
The first mention of the settlement is in a charter dating from 1273. In the Middle Ages, in 1559, the bishop of Veszprém had the Veléte palace (velétei palota) built here of which only the ruins are visible today. The Szentbékkálla region is interesting from geological aspects. The volcansim at the Bakony–Balaton Highland Volcanic Field produced beautiful wittness mountains which preserved the elevations of the Pliocene plains. The basalts contain various xenoliths. Among the xenoliths there are igneous inclusions genetically related to basalts. TECHNICAL 1200 shot 360 pano. gigapan stitcher crashed consistently at 3/4 way through the stitching. Following was done with autopano stitcher. Stitched to 12.x G pixels (361024x33614) At 36 hour mark, the renderer (smartblend) was half done and was slowing down so I aborted and resized renderer settings to 180512x16807 (1/4 of the original image pixels) for a 3.x gigapixel image. ============ LUMIX FZ18 (8 Mpixels) 504 mm equivalent F8 (diffraction limited this pano to 1/2 of the sensor 1-D resolution). As such 2:1 (1-D) downsizing should not adversely affect resolution. Fixed focus was adjusted (in error) part way through (just to the right of the church on the hill) due to a pause in shooting and softened the distant objects for the rest of the pano. |

The Stone Sea, near Szentbékkálla in the Kál Basin (Káli-medence), is one of the must see sights around here.
If climbing up on the large rock formation in the center, beware that the large cantilevered ledge ( bilegő kő, tipping stone) will suddenly tip downward ~10cm as you walk out on it. The unusual rock formations and stone cavities evolved following the post-volcanic era when thermal springs erupted in the area, and the hot water hardened and cemented the local white sand into a stone mass. This was my fathers playground as a child. |

After the 1879 Flood, in 1883, to protect itself against new floods, the town made a vow to build a church dedicated to Our Lady of Hungary. The construction of the church was continued after the war, from 1923. The neo-romanesque building of the Votive Church, promoted to a cathedral in 1931, was consecrated in 1930. In the meantime the construction of a complex group of ecclesiastical and university buildings surrounding in a quadrangle the monumental Cathedral Square of 12.000 m2 was also begun. The area of the square is as large as that of Saint Mark’s Square in Venice. |

Looking East at the Pest side of the Danube waterfront. Photo was made from the Fishermens Bastion on the Palace Hill. Margaret Island (Margit Sziget) at the far left. Parliament at the center. Chain bridge (Lanc Hid) is the first bridge to the right (south) of Parliament.
TECHNICAL The dynamic range of light due to the sun setting behind me was a big issue. The Hill I was on shadowed the foreground with the setting sun. Expose a stop or 2 lower and risk overexposing Parliament? Made even more difficult as the shadows were approaching Pest as the sun was setting. With the camera panning left to right the foreground shadows deepen going towards the right. Is the striping g due to vignetting? Pls comment as I thought vignetting was usually present at wide rather than telephoto settings. This pano has diffraction limited resolution due to F8 aperture and sensor size. |

Óbuda (sometimes written in English as Obuda) was a historical city in Hungary. United with Buda and Pest in 1873 it now forms part of District III of Budapest. The name means Old Buda in Hungarian (in German, Alt-Ofen). The name in Croatian and Serbian for this city is Stari Budim, but the local Croat minority calls it Obuda (the name "Budim" they use for the fortress in Buda).
The island (Óbuda Island) next to this part of the city today hosts the Sziget Festival, a huge music and cultural festival. Its centre is 'Fő tér' (Main Square), connected to a small square with a sculpture of people waiting for the rain to stop. It is accessible by HÉV ('Árpád híd' station). History: Settlements dating from the stone age have been found in Óbuda. The Romans built Aquincum, the capital of Pannonia province here. Hungarians arrived after 900 and it served as an important settlement of major tribal leaders, later kings. Béla IV of Hungary built a new capital after the 1241-1242 Mongol invasion in Buda, somewhat south of Óbuda. On January 1, 1873 it was united with Buda and Pest to form Budapest. The Obuda Jewish community, dated from the fifteenth century, was wiped out by the Ottoman conquest of 1526. Jews, not permitted to live in Buda, returned to Óbuda in 1712 under the protection of the counts Zilchy. In 1837, the Jewish community built a handsome classical-style synagogue entered via a portico whose high pediment is supported by six large Corinthian columns. This is still standing and now is used as a television studio. The Jewish community grew and prospered until the Shoah. Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%93buda |

This vegetable garden is in the well-drained sandy loam of a 13,000 year old ice-contact alluvial fan. Soil fertility is enhanced by tilling under 30 cm of tree leaves each autumn, and several cm of composted cow manure each spring. During the growing season, beds are mulched with compost and old hay. Most of the produce is eaten fresh, but potatoes, onions, and garlic are stored, and 2 dozen quarts of tomatoes are preserved.
Notes: This panorama required variable focus, but some areas confounded the autofocus, so the imager was monitored and paused if the camera failed to take a shot in time. The shot was then completed manually before the imager was resumed. |

TECHNICAL So why did this stitch to a perfect rectangle and some of the others stitch to a curved panel? Pronounced banding in this one too. Again, the overlap was minimal and perhaps this is it. |
