This was the very first Gigapan image I ever shot using a new Canon Powershot G9 12MP camera. I am not happy with the quality at all as there is far too much digital noise given the lighting conditions and the price of the camera. In the future I will probably use the noise reduction capabilities of Adobe Photoshop prior to running the stitching software.
This photo was taken on a dock on the North side of Alligator Lake, just east of St. Cloud, Florida.

check the forum and search for g9... I am considering buying a g9. Is there not a setting on the g9 to reduce noise? I have that setting on my Leica. Posted by Texas_Photo |

Hi Tex, That's what I thought too, just got the camera yesterday and there is nothing in the manual or settings that I could find since it seemed like noise reduction would be a standard feature on a $400 model. It is possible that I missed something somewhere and will keep trying to improve quality. I got the camera to do Gigapans with and am somewhat disappointed at this stage. Shooting at a very low 80-100 ISO seems to reduce the problem significantly though. David Posted by wndrin |

google search for 'PSG9_CUG_EN.pdf' which is the instruction manual and then search for noise. You will find a number of pages that describe how to reduce noise. Its a lot easier finding info in a digital manual versus a paper manual. You have a fine camera... keep it! Number one for shooting panos is to always select your *lowest* available ISO. Wow, he has some great ones! Looks like it is the ISO (part of the learning process) as several reviews mentioned that specific drawback, but still gave the camera a 'best in class'. Thanks for your input! Next one up (after the hurricanes pass) will be a lot cleaner. One neat feature I found about the camera is the ability to do time lapse video of 1-2 second delays. Pretty neat for easy stop action maybe! Posted by wndrin |
