Roadcut in shales south of Wilson Lake, Kansas. Can you identify it's proper place in the stratigraphy (http://www.kgs.ku.edu/Publications/Bulletins/189/09_meso.html#CRET) of the region?

Hi Ron... Loved your gigapan with the hidden little people! Just out of curiosity, what brand/model of camera did you use? Thanks.... Scott (Austin, TX) email: gigapan_user AT katzin.net

OK...I learned how to view your profile to see what camera(s) you use. Seeing that you have a telephoto converter lens for your S5IS , did you use that for this picture, or only the built in optical zoom? I'm using a Canon SD800 with only a 3x optical zoom and I'm not able to get nearly the level of detail you have. I'm just trying to figure out if I need to purchase a camera with more megapixels, or a larger optical zoom (or both), and which has more effect on detail. Thanks again and nice pans...

Hi Scott, As it turns out, I haven't used the tele-converter lens since my first three or four attempts. The zoom you see here is, in fact, something less than the full 12x optical zoom on the Canon S5 IS. I'd say the optical zoom (rather than the megapixels) is the key. Just so you know before you rush out and buy it, the S5 IS requires a specially machined mounting plate that (mildly) restricts the range of panning motion of the Gigapan unit (particularly in panning upwards). The tradeoff however is well worth it in my opinion, because the real power of the Gigapan site is the ability to do the really deep zooms. Glad you like the hidden little people, too. I just discovered they're a German toy called Mainzelmännchen. The two that I have are named Edi (hands at his sides) and Berti (waving).
